Lexington, Kentucky - Home of the Thoroughbred
Bluegrass Plank Flooring
Lexington, Kentucky is known as the Thoroughbred Horse "Capitol of the World"!  If you live in Central Kentucky, or have driven through this beautiful area, you well know this to be true!  The greater Lexington ares is dotted with literally hundreds of thoroughbred horse farms.  Most farms keep their horses in paddocks that are enclosed by "four board fences".  These fences are typically made of sixteen foot long boards, which can be red or white oak.  There are pine posts every eight feet, to which the oak planks are fastened.  Once erected, the fences are given a coat of either black or white paint, which is acrylic or latex.  These fences then give many years of service enclosing their valuable livestock.

When the fences are deemed to need replacing, they are demolished, and a new fence takes the place of the old one.  Normally, the used fencing is destined for the landfill, or, in some counties, the burn pile.  This is where we come in!!  Rather than destroying the fences, we come in and carefully cut the fencing boards from the posts.  It's a time-consuming process, and there is lots of waste, but the salvaged lumber makes some of the most beautiful flooring that we have seen.  We're sure you'll agree!
Bluegrass Plank Photographs
These two photos are of flooring that was unstained, with a polyurethane finish. This method of finishing allows for the contrasts in the lumber to be clearly seen.  It is quite beautiful, and while we hope that you enjoy these photos, they do not do the flooring justice.  The best way to judge the appearance of a floor is to stand on it!  The next best way is viewing of good photos.
The below photos are of Pegasus Plank that has been stained a medium walnut, with a polyurethane finish.  Notice that the floors have a more homogeneous look that does unstained.  They also have less "character" that the photos above.  Or perhaps because of the stain you notice less of the character.
Bluegrass Plank Specifications
Width:  4.5"

Thickness:  .75"

Average Length:  6'  This is actually a tough one!  Due to the way that the reclaimed lumber is harvested,            that is, cut between 8' spaced posts,  the average length of this lumber is about 7'.  After manufacture,        the average length of 90-95% of the flooring will be about 6'.  The balance of the pieces will be shorter;         and you'll need them for starter pieces.

Sides have the industry standard tongue and groove.

Bottoms of the floor are grooved for stress relief.

The below photos are close-ups of Pegasus Plank.  The top three have light stain (Pecan, by Cabot; the bottom three are unstained.  Both sets have been finished with Waterlox tung oil finish
